Tree planted to honor fallen Waldwick police officer

On Friday, November 14, a tree planting ceremony was held in honor of Police Officer Christoper Goodell.  This strong Copper Beech tree will be great reminder of Chris's strength, determination and courage.  The poem below was selected by the Goodell family and read at the ceremony.

By David H. Wright

If when I am gone
Thou Would'st  honor me
Then plant a tree.
Some highway, bleak and bare,
Make green with leaves.
So radiant and fair
And full of leaves my monument will be,
So ever full of tuneful melody.
My monument will be
A sight most rare-
Trees planted everywhere.
A highway broad from city to the sea-
Plant this in memory of me.

Fall Signing Day @ WHS

Congratulations to Michaela Petersen and Carly Thomson on signing to play lacrosse at the next level!

Michaela Petersen - Radford University
Michaela is fortunate enough to earn some athletic scholarship money to attend Division 1 Radford University to compete for their women’s lacrosse team. Michaela has been a varsity starter since Freshman year. In 2012 Michaela was a First-Team All-Conference selection, and in 2014 returning from a knee injury she was chosen as a Second-Team All Conference selection. In 2014 Michaela scored 16 goals, had 13 assists, and had 34 ground balls. During her career thus far in the Waldwick Lacrosse program, Michaela has scored 37 career goals and 18 assists with a total of 55 total points.
It has been a great career so far here for our lacrosse team with one more season to go and we wish Michaela the best of luck at Radford University next year.
Carly Thomson - Stockton College
Carly will be attending Stockton College to compete for the Ospreys on their women’s lacrosse team. Carly has been a varsity starter since Freshman year. In 2014, Carly was selected as an All-County Honorable Mention selection; Carly is also a two-time First-Team All-Conference selection for both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Last spring Carly became the first lacrosse player in Waldwick history to reach the 100 goal mark. She has a program high 100 goals, 38 assists totaling 138 career points.
There is still one more lacrosse season to go here at Waldwick to finish a great career and we wish Carly the best of luck at Stockton College next year.

WHS October Students of the Month

October Students of the Month 2014 – 2015

KATHRYN DEGELMAN – Katie, a senior, is currently enrolled in AP Literature and Composition.  Katie’s enthusiasm and dedication to the study of literature and her appreciation of reading helped make her a good choice for Student of the Month.  In AP English, she works hard to gain a deeper understanding of the work we are studying showing herself to be an excellent literary critic.  In addition, Katie is an excellent writer who shines in the classroom in her ability to discover the nuances of the text and shows that through her writing.  Most importantly, Katie loves to read and talk about the numerous books she devours.  It’s clear she is a lifelong reader.

ISABELLA AYVAZ – Isabella, a senior, is currently enrolled in AP Studio Art and has studied Art all four years of her high school career.  She is an extremely talented young woman and her artwork is meticulous and detailed.  Isabella has been a positive motivator for other young artists in the Art classroom.  She even used her artistic talent to design the Breast Cancer awareness jerseys for the girls’ soccer team.  Isabella will be greatly missed when she pursues her college goals.

SEAN BILLIES – Sean, a senior, is a Captain on the undefeated football team this year.  He leads by example and works hard every day on the field.  Sean anchors a line that is leading one of the best running attacks in North Jersey and plays defense on team allowing only 12 points a game.  Sean has not only been a great athlete so far this year, he has been a great student as well.  Sean is currently carrying all A’s and B’s in all of his classes and has been a respectful school citizen as well.  Sean is everything a Waldwick Warrior should be.

CARLY THOMSON – Carly, a senior, is a strong leader as Captain of the volleyball team.  Carly is encouraging to other players as well as leading by example on and off the court.  The other players look up to her and Carly is always giving 110% of herself during a game and during practice.  Carly has the difficult job of being the only setter in a 5:1 lineup.  She is in every play of the game and she touches the ball the most out of all of our players.  Carly averages about 12 assists a game and about 3 kills, which is amazing for a setter.  She is also one of our best servers and diggers.  Carly has really brought tremendous team spirit to the players.  She has hosted several pasta parties to support “togetherness” and helped create fun ideas for the pep rally.  Carly always conducts herself in a positive way.  She is respectful to her peers, coaches, officials and opponents.

Teen Car Control Training & Insurance Reduction Partnership

As a followup to last week's driver safety assembly, here is a great resource for parents.

Drive Safer has created a special website address just for WHS.  Check out more information about keeping your teens safe on the road:

Drive Safer hosts half-day sessions specifically designed for teen drivers to understand and experience car control in addition to safe driving fundamentals including good decision making, all related to the physical control of your vehicle in real-world conditions.
Our event includes a classroom session including tech education and four (4) “behind the wheel” exercises with a certified high-performance driving instructor in a safe, controlled environment. The instructors teach both in the vehicle and outside the vehicle as your teen observes others doing the exercises.
